Aim: How can we create a presentation in PowerPoint for our new sport project?
Wednesday, SWBAT Combine all their elements into a PowerPoint presentation
Aim: How can we create a presentation in PowerPoint for our new sport project?
Do Now: What do you remember about the PowerPoint presentations that we’ve done in this class and you’re others?
What are some good strategies for insuring that your PowerPoints are exciting and interesting?
What are some ways to achieve that goal when assembling PowerPoints?
Write a well developed paragraph answering these questions.
(5 min.)
Materials:
• Macs, class blog
• All materials scanned or photographed
• Paper, pens
• Expectations for PPT.
1.) Procedures- Elicit Do Now responses
AR: The PowerPoints that we have done have been pretty good, but the better one’s have used animation, photos, and other graphics to be more exciting. To make PowerPoints better they have to be a presentation and not be too wordy. You have to make it exciting for the viewer. (3-5 min.)
2.) Mini-lesson: Exploiting PowerPoint’s features.
Everyone open up PowerPoint and click on the Animation button.
Then click on the Transition scheme button. This is where you can really start to make your presentations more exciting.
You notice that there are 20 sum odd different transition schemes.
Then you have to decide whether you want to manipulate the slide, or whether it will automatically run.
Now you all know how to place photos or images in the PowerPoint.
You can even include videos and sounds that can be found also in the layout button.
(3-5 min.)
3.) Groups: Now I want you and your group members to assemble your PowerPoint for presentations on Friday. Whatever cannot be accomplished in class today, one person needs to be made responsible for finishing it tonight or tomorrow for class on Friday.
EXPECTATIONS FOR POWERPOINT:
I want a title slide.
A slide with an explanation for the sport and where the idea came from.
A few slides explaining the rules
A slide that has a graphic of the field of play
A slide showing the logo.
A slide showing the uniform sketches.
And a slide or slides that speaks to who this sport will appeal to. Who are the likely viewers of your new sport?

Do Now: What is the greatest field or ball park that you've ever visited? What makes it so great?
What does your sport's field need to look like?
How does one create a field for a new sport?
What is the process of presenting it to investors?
(5 min.)

Today you will finish your rule books and create a detailed sketch of what your field will be like.
You must annotate the sketch, (like the drawing of the baseball field from yesterday)
Annotating means giving an explanation in the margins of why the field is the way it is.
Annotating means giving information, or notes in the margins of something.
This sketch will only be a first draft. You will create a better drawing next week for your presentation.

Aim: How can we create an informative feature for our portfolio?
Do Now: Based on your prior knowledge, which sport do you suppose has the most injuries? Why do you think this? Write a paragraph with a topic sentence explaining your answer. (5 min.)
2.) Whole Class: Today and tomorrow we are going to create the second part of our portfolio- an article that we’ve done many times before, an informative feature.
3.) REVIEW Mini-lesson: Informative feature
This is an Informative Sports Feature – these are stories that report on larger trends in sports and usually rely on research and expert opinion. For example, if a player passes out from dehydration or an NFL player collapses during training camp, the feature will use this event to discuss the importance of proper diet and nutrition.
Who remembers the three times we’ve written these types of articles?

Freak Injury Taking Out Players
By Aron Phillips
On Blazers.com, Mike Rice wrote a story a few years back titled, “The New Martell Webster.” After hearing this week that he’ll be out for the year, I’m more concerned with the old one.
While there have been varying reports over the past couple weeks as to the status of Webster and whether or not he’ll play for the Trail Blazers this year, The Oregonian and team trainer Jay Jensen have reported that he will be missing the rest of the regular season.
But why?
When Webster fractured the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot during the preseason, his initial decision surrounded whether or not he would undergo surgery or simply rehabilitate his left foot.
“If the fracture is displaced, then it’s usually better to do surgery,” says Robert A. Sampson, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in Portland, Oregon. “You reach the point of healing sooner if you do surgery on it. If it is not displaced, then you generally heal fine without surgery.”
Wanting to expedite the process, Webster chose the route of surgery and was supposed to miss at least eight weeks and potentially as many as 20-25 games. But with the hardwood calling his name, Webster returned to the court on December 7 in Toronto.
As you already know, his comeback was short-lived. Five minutes into the game, Webster had re-injured his foot, and a CT scan taken the next day showed the crack in his foot had reopened.
“We lost a piece of this team and I think an important piece,” coach Nate McMillan said at the time in The Oregonian. “He was one of the guys this year who could help us spread the floor and take some of that pressure off the low-post game and (we were) hoping he would have a big year. We’ll have to make adjustments.”
At 23 years old, Webster was slated to be the starting small forward for the Blazers this season. He had just signed a four-year contract extension in October, worth about $20 million and life was good. But while the Blazers say that X-rays of the injury show improvement, and that he has been cleared to begin low-impact workouts, Webster still has to work hard to get back to full strength.
“Once it’s fully healed, you should slowly ramp up your weight bearing activities,” says Dr. Sampson. Also, you usually would have to rehab the soft tissue attachments around the bone with aggressive therapy because they were not in use.”
Webster isn’t the only one that should be taking advice from Sampson. Marquette’s senior guard Dominic James also just fractured the same fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot, and is expected to recover in about 100 days. If he can weather the storm, James may be ready for the NBA pre-draft event in Chicago, which is scheduled to start May 27 – a place where he has to impress if he has any hopes of being drafted this June.
But GMs don’t worry. Unlike a knee injury that may hamper a player for their career (re: Chris Webber), fracturing the fifth metatarsal bone in your foot does not have lasting effects.
“Once it is truly healed, he’s no more at risk than if he had not fractured it,” says Dr. Sampson. “Once it has healed, the bone becomes strong again and you’re good to go.”

• Articles, covers
• 8 page zine template, page examples
1.) Procedures:
Elicit Do Now responses- AR:
(5 min.)
2.) Whole class:
Q: The important question to ask yourselves is: “How can we achieve the graphic look we want?”
Most of us are familiar with designing the layouts for internet pages, like MySpace, or Twitter.
How is a graphic look achieved with internet sites?
Good. That is exactly how you achieve a graphic look on the printed page.
You can also achieve this with borders and wingnuts, these can all be generated on Microsoft Word and later manipulated either by copying and pasting, or printing them out and actually cutting and pasting, like it was done back in the day. (3-5 min.)
3.) Mini-lesson: graphic look.
Distribute page examples.
As you can see from example one and example two, the graphic look of your fanzine can be anything you can imagine.
Things like borders, back grounds, and images are the tools you need to create the look you want.
Turn and talk to your partner, what does the graphic look of example one seem to be going for?
(30 sec.)
I’m going to call on someone randomly.

I’m going to call on someone randomly.
So, the sky’s the limit. You can make these as creative as you can be.
Have fun with the layout part, guys. This is where the fanzine becomes a very personal thing.
(5-7 min.)
4.) Independent Practice/Group work:
Now get back into your groups and start to assemble the next two pages, and/or put the finishing touches on your final articles and content.
You should have all four or five of your pieces here, two in final draft, two or three in rough draft.
If you need to use the internet for research you can research for only five minutes today.
I’m starting the timer now, please take notes for anything else you need to do.
(15 min.)
5.) Summary: Q: so how can achieve the graphic look we want?
AR: Through our imagination, creativity and things like backgrounds, borders, images, and photos.
6.) HOME WORK: Tomorrow will be the day when we have a final assembly of all eight pages.
EVERY article needs to be in final draft.
Your homework tonight is to make sure you can successfully layout all remaining pages.
Print out all articles, in final draft.
Print out any background graphics you might want to put behind your layouts.
Have all photos you want to include in your layouts.

Do Now: what sort of a look are you going for with your fanzine?
Cluttered? Full of text and pictures?
More slick and professional?
More of a homemade look, like a scrapbook?
Or something else entirely?
Spend a few minutes visualizing and then describing how you want the final product to look.
Write a vivid description or jot down 5 to ten bullets of how you want the final product to look.
THIS WILL BE COLLECTED. WORK WITH YOUR PARTNER, IF YOU HAVE ONE.

2.) Mini-Lesson- Layout inspiration.
So, as I’ve been checking your progress, I have noticed that most of you are utilizing the tools on Microsoft Word that allow you to give your articles a more magazine look.
For those of you who are not using columns, you should, because it will make your project look much more like a magazine or fanzine and less like an essay for school.
Here’s a link to help you format your Word docs.
http://www.ehow.com/how_4910728_make-magazine-using-microsoft-word.html
This is only for those who don’t know how to do this; I think most of you have figured it out.
Otherwise, here is a handout to give you some inspiration for page layout and covers.
Distribute handout.
As you can see, text should always be interspersed with images. The rule generally is two columns per page.
You can also see two more cover designs, again these are reliant on photos that take up the whole cover and not drawings, like the other examples I gave you. (5 min.)
3.) Whole Class: Before we start our writing or designing today, I want to give everyone a rubric so you can get a feel for how this project will be graded.
Scoring Rubric for FANZINE

Well, fanzines usually have a homemade look to them, not to slick and kind of "underground"
Please look at the handout for some examples...
Punk rock and comics is how fanzines started, so here's some classic examples, including my fanzine from 1988, when I was your age, "Right Trash" # 1 from 1988.

Aim: How can we do a funny article or a rant and rave for our fanzine?
Do Now: What are some things in school or life that really make you angry or annoyed?
Write a paragraph about one such situation or example.
THIS WILL BE COLLECTED! (5 min.)
Materials:
• Paper, pens
• Class blog, Macs
• Mr. Oliver’s rant and rave model
Procedures:
1.) Elicit Do Now responses-
AR: answers will vary (5 min.)
2.) Model:
I cannot stand this class! You guys drive me insane! First of all, I would just like one day where you guys can start off by doing the right thing, meaning, come in and immediately go to the blog and do the Do Now! You guys are so selfish, I mean, really!!!! Like you don’t spend enough time on the internet? Really!? You don’t spend all freaking night mindlessly surfing, going on AIM, like all night, and then Facebook, ad nauseum! Really!!!!!???? You have to do that here too, right?!
And you’re all so selfish! Really!? Really!? Do you have to check your baseball gloves and shoes and scores and everything else during class? Really!? And you guys really think I’m stupid, too. That’s the insulting part of it all… Do you think I was born in the 1870’s? No! I got news for you, I was born in the 1970’s, grew up in the 80’s and I know all about technology. I know when you’re at a site that has nothing to do with what we’re doing! I know when you are texting; I am not your grimy old granny, man! Really!? You really think that after almost three years of doing this that I haven’t seen it all before! Guess what, I have! I know when you’re texting and I know when you’re surfing and getting sucked into that monitor like a bowl of green jello! I was annoying my teachers before most of you were even a figment of your parent’s imaginations guys! You can’t get over on me.
Ugh! So anyway, I am thoroughly disgusted with most of you, but I know the same thing will happen to most of you that has happened to a lot of my other students: one day, probably next year, you will see me in the hall and you will smile because you remember this class fondly, and something I said was proven to be true, or maybe, maybe, maybe, something you learned in here will come in handy. Well, I’ll say it in advance, you are welcome!
Here is my example of what a typical rant and rave article in your fanzine might be like, think about like one of those fan pages on Facebook.
What I just did was a rant and rave, this is the type of article that you should do for your fanzine. Now I want you to try to do a rant/rave on your own. (5 min.)
Are there questions or concerns at this time?
3.) Independent Practice/Group work:
Now, I want serious progress today, finish your first article and your partner should be working on his or her first article.
If you need to do internet research, you have ten minutes and then it will just be writing, so whatever you need to research do it now and take good notes.
No more dawdling! Your ten minute research period begins now, and then bye bye internet!
(10 min.)
Now it’s time to get down to the writing. Paper and pen or Word, but all progress must be checked by me before you can get your leave ticket.
Just like yesterday, your progress will be monitored by me.
By the end of today, I want to see your finished first article, or significant progress from yesterday and the beginnings of your second article.
Please e-mail me your progress at ROliver2@schools.nyc.gov
4.) Summary: Let’s have a three people at random share with us what they have been working on.
5.) Okay please e-mail me your progress at this time, ROliver2@schools.nyc.gov

Each of the groups will present their finalized and proof read magazines to the rest of the class.

Sporting Events and Politics: Sometimes, it isn’t Just a Game
Your group will be assigned one of the following events to present to class, using Power Point.
1. 1980 Olympic hockey victory over the USSR at Lake Placid, New York. The Russian players (professionals) lost 4-3 to the Americans (students) who later went to capture the gold medal.
2. Jesse Owens’ four gold medals at Munich Olympics in 1936 (humiliating Adolf Hitler) in a dramatic example of American defiance of Nazism.
3. Zola Budd (South African Olympic Runner) competing in 1984 in Los Angeles, California. Budd claimed British citizenship, fearing she would not be able to compete for her homeland because of governmental policies of apartheid.
4. 1968 World Series victory by Detroit Tigers (perhaps preventing a repeat of rioting see in the summer of 1967.) Despite the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, Detroit was relatively peaceful that summer.
5. Palestinian Terrorists killing 11 Israeli athletes and one German policeman in 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. Yassir Araft planned the attack. Israel retaliated in kind, prolonging the violence in this war-torn region.
6. Joe Louis v. Max Schmeling boxing rematch June 22, 1938 in Yankee Stadium. Schmeling was used as a pawn by Hitler to model Aryan strength and superiority. Schmeling was sent to Siberia as a consequence of his loss to Louis. He displayed great character when he paid for Joe Louis’ funeral in 1981.
7. 1968 Olympics in Mexico City; Americans Tommie Smith and John Carlos (finishing first and third in the 200m run) raising one gloved hand in a Black Power salute. The athletes were promptly suspended from their national team and banned from the Olympic Village.
8. Billie Jean King defeat self-proclaimed chauvinist pig Bobby Riggs in three straight sets in a tennis match at the Houston Astrodome in September, 1973.
9. Roger Bannister broke the barrier for the four-minute mile on May 6, 1954. People said this could not be done.
10. 1966 Texas Western NCAA Men’s Basketball victory; the first five African-American starters played in a championship game.

Aim: Can sports cause society to change?
Do Now: Give me a thumbs up if you ever had a moment of accomplishment, where you’ve felt really proud? Maybe it’s a time when you made the winning goal, made up time in a relay, got 100% on a test you studied for really hard or someone you care about told you they were proud of you.
Below there are some images of sports figures that have caused great social change. One person, Jackie Robinson, you are probably very familiar with, the others, the 1980 USA Olympic hockey team, and 1936 Olympic track star, Jesse Owens, you probably aren’t familiar with.
Based on your prior knowledge, brainstorm what you know about these sports stars. (5 min.)

Aim: Why is baseball so important to the Dominican Republic?
Do Now: What do you know about the Dominican Republic?
Or: Who are some of your favorite baseball players from the DR?
Write a paragraph ON PAPER with a topic sentence, answering one or both of these questions.
THIS WILL BE COLLECTED AND GRADED AS A QUIZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!
READ THE ARTICLE BELOW:
Baseball and the Dominican Republic:
When Dominican great, Juan Samuel, once said, “ You don’t walk off the island. You hit.” He was describing the national pastime of the Dominican Republic, baseball. In the gritty town of Boca Chica, a town on the southern coast, bareball players practice with sticks and old tennis balls, dreaming of one day playprofessional baseball.
In a country where more than one million of the eight million people have fled poverty to live in the United States, stars like Alex Rodriguez (born to Dominican parents in the U.S) proudly proclaim they are “Dominicanos.”
Baseball in the Caribbean goes back to 1866 when it was first introduced on the island of Cuba by American sailors. When a ten-year war brought instability to Cuba, many Cubans fled to the Dominican Republic and brought the game of baseball with them. Although, some believe that baseball as we know it today was not introduced in the Dominican until 1916 with the eight-year occupation by the United States Marines. By the 1920’s, Dominicans were traveling to Cuba, Puerto Rico and North America to play games. In 1937, a three-team league brought together some of the best players money could buy. The 1937 season was memorable because the “Ciudad Trujillo Drageons” would prevail and win the series, but it took a financial toll on the country. Just like some professional teams today, the Dominican teams spent too much money on talent and the league went bankrupt. Professional baseball would not return to the Dominican Republic for 14 years. Even with the absence of pro teams, amateur baseball thrived. Dominican and American sugar mill owners approved of the sport and encouraged their workers to play. During the six-month dead season, sugarcane requires less maintenance and workers who were unemployed played in amateur leagues. Competitions were set up to pit one sugar mill against another. Young baseball players were soon being recruited from all over the Caribbean and the United States.
The Dominican Republic now exports its finest native sons to America: 71 players were on major-league rosters in 2002. They include Pedro Martinez, the
Boston pitcher and Cy Young winner; Manny Ramirez, the Cleveland slugger; and Sammy Sosa, the famous home-run hitter. The country produces more major-leaguers than any foreign nation and, per capita, far more than any U.S. state.
More than 20 major league teams now have baseball-training camps for prospective players. Some critics worry because so many teenagers drop out of high school for their baseball pursuits. They say young people should worry about diplomas, not contracts. But baseball players find nothing wrong with dreaming, and those players who are lucky enough to make the team are usually young boys between the ages of 17 and 18. Once selected, they are sent to the team’s camp where they are housed, fed, and coached. The average player will make about $800.00 a month. If a prospect shows promise, he is then promoted to the minor league system in the United States with hopes of making it to the majors. Unfortunately, out of the hundreds that tryout, only a handful will ever make it to the major leagues.

Write a paragraph about how sports effect our community.
This will be collected and graded as a quiz. (5 min.)
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE FROM THE 2006 AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYOFFS:
A Pitcher's Wrist
October 13, 2006
The Detroit Tigers are contending for their first American League title since 1984.
They have beaten the Oakland A’s in two straight games (make that three straight
games) to take a two (three) games to none lead in the playoff series. But, the
Detroit Free Press is reporting that Tiger relief pitching star Joel Zumaya has
inflammation in his right wrist and forearm.
The article states:
Zumaya was not available in Game 2. The Tigers won, anyway, as their other relief
pitchers – Fernando Rodney, in particular – threw the crucial innings usually
reserved for Zumaya. Yet, even as the victory gave Detroit a two-games-to-none
series lead, there were questions Thursday about how Zumaya's absence would
affect the team's chance to win the AL pennant, and ultimately contend for a world
title.
An entire city is worried about one man’s sore wrist.

Period 6 Sports Management – Mr. Oliver
Preview Story
Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 was the first scrimmage game for the Francis Lewis Patriots varsity baseball team. Getting into about the fourth inning and losing by a few, the game shortly had to come to an end due to the sun going down. “If the sun didn't go down so early, we would've rocked them just like we did to Thomas Edison's team last season” said Jonathan Bobea, pitcher for the Francis Lewis team. A few of the teams players consist of David Torres who plays shortstop, Ozzy Robles who plays third base, Crissandre Javier who plays center field, and Jonathan Bobea, one of the best pitchers on the team who topped 91 miles per hour! How does the team describe their coach Ian Millman in a few short words? Experienced. Tough. Strict.
Last years ending record for the Francis Lewis Patriots was 12 wins and 4 losses. One thing they hope to achieve this year? A better record. “Practice makes perfect”, says Sean Hidalgo, graduating student of '09 who was on the team. The Patriots practice up to 3 or 4 times a week for about 3 hours at a time. Some players on the team, are being scouted. For example, Ozzy Robles, who is being scouted by Arizona State University. For the first time in a while, there's even some major league baseball teams looking at Francis Lewis' team.
“I would have to say that Bayside and Cardozo are the biggest rivalry's for our team”, says David Torres. “Most definitely Cardozo”, says Jonathan Bobea. All of the players on the Francis Lewis team have the same goal. That's to win the division just like they did last year. The first counting game of the upcoming 2010 season, is on April 8th. Francis Lewis will be going head to head against Bushwick, a highschool baseball team located in Brooklyn.

Preview Story: FLHS Baseball Team
Be prepared: Francis Lewis High School’s baseball team, the Patriots, is expected to have an incredible season. They are a team that can comeback from a 9:0 deficit, to end up winning 10:21, miraculously. Just ask Thomas Edison High School (the team they’ve defeated), if it’s too hard to believe. The Patriots are a force when it comes to offense, as they can make a baseball game look like a football game, in terms of when looking at the final score. There is reason for optimism, to expect the Patriots to have a breakout magical year.
The Patriots have four impacting players on their team: Jonathon Boboa (SP), David Torres (SS), Ozzie Roblus (3B), and Cassandra Jabie (CF). Boboa can dial up his fastball up to 91-miles per hour and throws a changeup and curveball to go along with it. His favorite player is unsurprisingly, Josh Beckett, who is known for his blazing fastball and top-notch curveball. Boboa is currently being scouted by Arizona State College, whereas Roblus is being scouted by ASU. Torres and Boboa started their baseball careers when they were a freshman. Jabie first started in his sophomore year. Jabie’s favorite players are Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran in MLB. All four players’ favorite team is the New York Mets. If for whatever reason their pro-ball careers are corrupted/interfered, they remarked they will pursue being a federal agent or play softball for their career.
Baseball season is almost here and the Patriots are ready to compete with hopefully many contributing players on the team. Their first baseball game will be held on April 8. They will have to stay competitive throughout the season if they want to prove to Cardozo that they are the better team. Cardozo High School is competitive almost every year and is always on top, the players say. But the four players believe they have a great team, and it’s hard to not believe them.

The reigning champs, the mighty Patriots are about to start their new season with some familiar faces such as Jonathon Bobea, a pitcher; David Torres, a short stop; Ozzie Robles, a third baseman, and Crisandry Javier, a center fielder.
They played hard last season to take the win. In the match against Thomas Edison where the Patriots were down for the count with the score 0-9 came back with a vengeance with amazing hits and pitch to win the game 21-11. Other memorable game was when they were about to loss with 2-8 and stopped playing badly to end up with an astonishing win with the score of 11-8.
This year with the team getting back in shape to play their first game in Brooklyn, Lincoln Terrace Park – Baseball Field verses EBC/ Bushwick Leaders on April 8th who would be challenge for them the last two seasons. Last season the EBC/ Bushwick Leaders Panthers, 10-4, defeated the Patriots and the season before EBC/ Bushwick Leaders were the champs with 14 wins and 2 loses. The Patriots have lost to them every season. So come to Brooklyn, Lincoln Terrace Park – Baseball Field on April 8th to see who will win.
Public speaking guide
Public speaking is scary for nearly everyone. Jerry Seinfeld had a joke that went something like this: “There are more people, according to surveys, who say their biggest fear is public speaking than people who say their biggest fear is death. This means that at a funeral, most people would rather be in the coffin than at the podium giving the eulogy.”
So don’t sweat it; everyone is nervous. You’re supposed to be. However. Keep in mind that at 16, you’re not expected to seem as collected or as smooth as Barack Obama. Expect to be imperfect and nervous, and things will be easier. It takes a long time and many speeches to become good at public speaking, so cut yourself some slack.
Still, you should try your best and here are some things you should do to make your presentation better and more natural.
• Memorize key ideas, details, and facts—then use notes to guide you through your speech. Don’t write out your whole presentation. It’s unnatural to read from a speech while giving a presentation. You can’t make eye contact and the speech just ends up sounding canned and insincere. So instead, identify the facts, statistics, and details of your presentation and then memorize them. This way, you can just talk about your ideas and you will sound natural. You can have notes to remind you of your key points and structure, but only as a guide. Don’t read from your notes for more than one sentence.
• Remember that your nervousness is irrational. Most people get nervous when giving a presentation. This is usually because you are thinking about yourself, what you look like, your mistakes and flaws, and how people perceive you. It’s hard, but try to instead stay focused only on the topic of the speech. Here’s a secret: while you are giving your speech, many people in the class will be daydreaming, wondering why that person was rude to them in the hall just before class, thinking about themselves and how they look today, or wondering how they will sound when they participate in the post-presentation discussion. In other words, people notice you less than you think they do.
Here are the elements of public speaking that you want to practice in this presentation:
• Rebuttal & Refutation: This means anticipating and addressing the opponent’s or audience member’s objection or counter argument. If you eliminate the objections to your argument before someone makes those objections, you will seem much more persuasive.
• Eye contact. You should make constant, sweeping eye contact with your audience. This takes practice, so practice with your family, friends, or like Cartman, your collection of dolls and stuffed animals.
• Voice projection. Note how loud your teachers talk. They are almost yelling. The classroom does not have good acoustics and you will have to really speak up for the class to hear you.
• Subject-matter competence. If you really know your subject, your facts, and what the rebuttals and objections will be, than you should be able to do your speech more or less without notes. Once we get going this year, you will really be able to tell which students know their subject inside and out and which do not. Practice, practice, practice, study, study, study.
• Pace yourself. Practice your speech many times. Some people speed up and finish in two minutes, some slow down and take twenty. Really work on getting your speech down to the right length and try to stay at that pace.
• Evidence: you need to make your case logically. This means that you need to give the audience three reasons to believe your thesis and you need to give some evidence (statistics, quotes, charts, graphs, etc) that each reason is true. Research is key here.
• Passion: if you really want to convince us of something, you should seem convinced of it yourself. Raise your voice; make it clear to us that you are concerned. If you sound like Ben Stein, you are not convincing us of much.
• Professionalism: Stay professional. If you curse you might get some laughs from the audience, but they don’t give you the grade. I do. And I need you to take this assignment seriously. Leave the adolescent humor to me.
