Aim: How can we create a logo for a sports team using Powerpoint?

Tuesday, SWBAT create a simple Powerpoint presentation

Aim: How can we create a logo for a sports team using Powerpoint?

Do Now: What is your favorite sports team and logo? Why do you suppose that it appeals to you?
Write a paragraph detailing why this logo has an appeal to you. (5 min.)

Materials:
• Macs, class blog
• Powerpoint tutorial
• Powerpoint project handout

Procedures:

1.) Elicit Do Now responses
AR: I like the Yankees logo because it reminds me of my childhood…
(3-5 min.)

2.) Mini-Lesson: Overview of project this week. This week we are going to be creating a logo for a fictional team for a city that doesn’t have any teams, or doesn’t have any teams in the sport that you decide to choose.
This project will require you to do research about the city to figure out what your team should be called, based on the culture of that city.

This project will require you to design a logo.

This project will require you to learn how to do a Powerpoint presentation.

This project will require you to scan images into your home computer, if you have one, turn your images into a Jpeg. And then manipulate them into a Powerpoint. Please see me if your home does not have a scanner.

Let’s look at this Powerpoint handout to get an idea of what my expectations are for this project.

Are there any questions, so far?

(2-3 min.)

Distribute PPt. handout

3.) Model:
Teacher will run through PPt., including examples of student work.

“A Sports Team Mascot isn’t just a symbol of a team…
It is the flag for which the heritage, culture and history of a city should base it’s own civic pride…”

A Knick, or Knickbocker, is a name often cited in reference to New York City--an allusion to the fictional character "Father Knickerbocker" who, according to the tale told by Washington Irving, was the head of the first socially prominent family in New York.

Etc. (5-10 min.)

Are there any questions, so far?

4.) Pairs: Now work with the person sitting next to you. On the blog there is a link for a very effective Powerpoint Tutorial(http://www.actden.com/PP/) that I want you to both go through.
This website will teach you and your partner how to create a Powerpoint.

Make sure you click on the link that will show you how to create a Powerpoint with the 2007 version and not the older version.

Split the screen on your monitor and open up Powerpoint from the menu on the bottom.

Click through the tutorial, to the best of your ability.

After 12 minutes, I want you and your partner to create two slides with text and a picture or graphic. I will circulate to help you

(12-15 min.)

5.) Summary: Once you have created your group’s two slides with text and graphics, prove that you have basic Powerpoint creating skills by putting both your names on the slides and e-mail them to me for credit. (remainder of period)

6.) HOMEWORK: Pick a sport that you will be interested in creating a make-believe team for. You can choose a logo for a team, or if you want for a company that makes merchandise, skateboards, or apparel, if that interests you more.
