Take 15 minutes to brainstorm and create your team idea. You must have a city and a team idea before the end of today. (15 min.)

HOMEWORK: Come up with at least 5 small sketches that show a variety of logo ideas. Create some that are word-based, some that are image-based, and some that are letter-based.

Aim: How can we create a logo for a sports team using Powerpoint?

Tuesday, SWBAT create a simple Powerpoint presentation

Aim: How can we create a logo for a sports team using Powerpoint?

Do Now: What is your favorite sports team and logo? Why do you suppose that it appeals to you?
Write a paragraph detailing why this logo has an appeal to you. (5 min.)

Materials:
• Macs, class blog
• Powerpoint tutorial
• Powerpoint project handout

Procedures:

1.) Elicit Do Now responses
AR: I like the Yankees logo because it reminds me of my childhood…
(3-5 min.)

2.) Mini-Lesson: Overview of project this week. This week we are going to be creating a logo for a fictional team for a city that doesn’t have any teams, or doesn’t have any teams in the sport that you decide to choose.
This project will require you to do research about the city to figure out what your team should be called, based on the culture of that city.

This project will require you to design a logo.

This project will require you to learn how to do a Powerpoint presentation.

This project will require you to scan images into your home computer, if you have one, turn your images into a Jpeg. And then manipulate them into a Powerpoint. Please see me if your home does not have a scanner.

Let’s look at this Powerpoint handout to get an idea of what my expectations are for this project.

Are there any questions, so far?

(2-3 min.)

Distribute PPt. handout

3.) Model:
Teacher will run through PPt., including examples of student work.

“A Sports Team Mascot isn’t just a symbol of a team…
It is the flag for which the heritage, culture and history of a city should base it’s own civic pride…”

A Knick, or Knickbocker, is a name often cited in reference to New York City--an allusion to the fictional character "Father Knickerbocker" who, according to the tale told by Washington Irving, was the head of the first socially prominent family in New York.

Etc. (5-10 min.)

Are there any questions, so far?

4.) Pairs: Now work with the person sitting next to you. On the blog there is a link for a very effective Powerpoint Tutorial(http://www.actden.com/PP/) that I want you to both go through.
This website will teach you and your partner how to create a Powerpoint.

Make sure you click on the link that will show you how to create a Powerpoint with the 2007 version and not the older version.

Split the screen on your monitor and open up Powerpoint from the menu on the bottom.

Click through the tutorial, to the best of your ability.

After 12 minutes, I want you and your partner to create two slides with text and a picture or graphic. I will circulate to help you

(12-15 min.)

5.) Summary: Once you have created your group’s two slides with text and graphics, prove that you have basic Powerpoint creating skills by putting both your names on the slides and e-mail them to me for credit. (remainder of period)

6.) HOMEWORK: Pick a sport that you will be interested in creating a make-believe team for. You can choose a logo for a team, or if you want for a company that makes merchandise, skateboards, or apparel, if that interests you more.

Preview Story

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 was the first scrimmage game for the Francis Lewis Patriots varsity baseball team. Getting into about the fourth inning and losing by a few, the game shortly had to come to an end due to the sun going down. “If the sun didn't go down so early, we would've rocked them just like we did to Thomas Edison's team last season” said Jonathan Bobea, pitcher for the Francis Lewis team. A few of the teams players consist of David Torres who plays shortstop, Ozzy Robles who plays third base, Crissandre Javier who plays center field, and Jonathan Bobea, one of the best pitchers on the team who topped 91 miles per hour! How does the team describe their coach Ian Millman in a few short words? Experienced. Tough. Strict.
Last years ending record for the Francis Lewis Patriots was 12 wins and 4 losses. One thing they hope to achieve this year? A better record. “Practice makes perfect”, says Sean Hidalgo, graduating student of '09 who was on the team. The Patriots practice up to 3 or 4 times a week for about 3 hours at a time. Some players on the team, are being scouted. For example, Ozzy Robles, who is being scouted by Arizona State University. For the first time in a while, there's even some major league baseball teams looking at Francis Lewis' team.
“I would have to say that Bayside and Cardozo are the biggest rivalry's for our team”, says David Torres. “Most definitely Cardozo”, says Jonathan Bobea. All of the players on the Francis Lewis team have the same goal. That's to win the division just like they did last year. The first counting game of the upcoming 2010 season, is on April 8th. Francis Lewis will be going head to head against Bushwick, a highschool baseball team located in Brooklyn.

Preview Story: FLHS Baseball Team
Be prepared: Francis Lewis High School’s baseball team, the Patriots, is expected to have an incredible season. They are a team that can comeback from a 9:0 deficit, to end up winning 10:21, miraculously. Just ask Thomas Edison High School (the team they’ve defeated), if it’s too hard to believe. The Patriots are a force when it comes to offense, as they can make a baseball game look like a football game, in terms of when looking at the final score. There is reason for optimism, to expect the Patriots to have a breakout magical year.
The Patriots have four impacting players on their team: Jonathon Boboa (SP), David Torres (SS), Ozzie Roblus (3B), and Cassandra Jabie (CF). Boboa can dial up his fastball up to 91-miles per hour and throws a changeup and curveball to go along with it. His favorite player is unsurprisingly, Josh Beckett, who is known for his blazing fastball and top-notch curveball. Boboa is currently being scouted by Arizona State College, whereas Roblus is being scouted by ASU. Torres and Boboa started their baseball careers when they were a freshman. Jabie first started in his sophomore year. Jabie’s favorite players are Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran in MLB. All four players’ favorite team is the New York Mets. If for whatever reason their pro-ball careers are corrupted/interfered, they remarked they will pursue being a federal agent or play softball for their career.
Baseball season is almost here and the Patriots are ready to compete with hopefully many contributing players on the team. Their first baseball game will be held on April 8. They will have to stay competitive throughout the season if they want to prove to Cardozo that they are the better team. Cardozo High School is competitive almost every year and is always on top, the players say. But the four players believe they have a great team, and it’s hard to not believe them.

Sherice Gayle

The Francis Lewis Baseball team is ready for the beginning of there season. A lot of there players are making progress to have a good season. Last season they were nubmer1 in there league with a record of 12-4. They had a good season but this year they lost players who where seniors such as Adam Alcamo whos batting average is .129 and he was on varsity all 4years.
This season there are still star players. Jonathon bobea(SP)-91MPH, is being scouted by Arizona state college. He started playing when he was a freshman and now he will be facing his last year. He Throws a curveball, change up, fastball. From all these skills that he has hopefully his great talent will lead him to having a scholorship and bringing his team to the championship.
Crisandry jabie is another great player who even though he started his freshman year he is showing improvement he is now also a senior who hasn’t had any scouting but he is still gonna work hard to his ability for this season. On April 12th Francis Lewis will be going against Bayside which is a rivary game just like Boston Redsox and The NY Yankees.
This baseball team has been practing to there best abilities we encourage all to come out and support the Francis lewis baseball team.

The above quote stated by Nolan Ryan, a baseball legend, reflects the past achievements and the future determination of FLHS'S Varsity Baseball Team as they are striving hard to prove what they are capable of doing. So come see them in action to see what they are really made of.........

Play Ball!

The Francis Lewis boy’s varsity baseball team has high expectations for this 2010 season. They hope to win the division again and continue with an impressive record from their last year’s 12-4 record. Their first game is April 8th against Bushwick Leaders High School. They hope to come out with a win right from the start.
The Patriots have a group of seniors that will help them achieve their goal. Including David Torres, Jonathon Bobea and Chrisandry Javier. Jonathon is their star pitcher who throws at best 91 mph and has been scouted by many colleges and even some major league teams. Another one of their star players is a junior that plays 3rd base, his name is Ozzie Robles and he has already been scouted by Arizona State.
They say their biggest threat is Cardozo and Bayside, Cardozo being their biggest rivals. Francis Lewis verse Cardozo in any sport is always a good game because both schools have very talented and high competitive sports teams. The Patriots verse Bayside on April 12th and Cardozo on May 17th. Lets hope Lewis comes out in a victory and wins the division like they deserve.

The teams rivals are Benjamin Cardozo High School and also following Bayside High School and they seem more than ready to demolish and tear both schools to pieces and shred them apart. It doesn’t seem like they don’t want to lose especially Jonathan who gets pretty upset when he doesn’t do good, ouuuch! don’t want to get him mad eh?….

The reigning champs, the mighty Patriots are about to start their new season with some familiar faces such as Jonathon Bobea, a pitcher; David Torres, a short stop; Ozzie Robles, a third baseman, and Crisandry Javier, a center fielder.
They played hard last season to take the win. In the match against Thomas Edison where the Patriots were down for the count with the score 0-9 came back with a vengeance with amazing hits and pitch to win the game 21-11. Other memorable game was when they were about to loss with 2-8 and stopped playing badly to end up with an astonishing win with the score of 11-8.
This year with the team getting back in shape to play their first game in Brooklyn, Lincoln Terrace Park – Baseball Field verses EBC/ Bushwick Leaders on April 8th who would be challenge for them the last two seasons. Last season the EBC/ Bushwick Leaders Panthers, 10-4, defeated the Patriots and the season before EBC/ Bushwick Leaders were the champs with 14 wins and 2 loses. The Patriots have lost to them every season. So come to Brooklyn, Lincoln Terrace Park – Baseball Field on April 8th to see who will win.

Public speaking guide

Public speaking is scary for nearly everyone. Jerry Seinfeld had a joke that went something like this: “There are more people, according to surveys, who say their biggest fear is public speaking than people who say their biggest fear is death. This means that at a funeral, most people would rather be in the coffin than at the podium giving the eulogy.”

So don’t sweat it; everyone is nervous. You’re supposed to be. However. Keep in mind that at 16, you’re not expected to seem as collected or as smooth as Barack Obama. Expect to be imperfect and nervous, and things will be easier. It takes a long time and many speeches to become good at public speaking, so cut yourself some slack.

Still, you should try your best and here are some things you should do to make your presentation better and more natural.
• Memorize key ideas, details, and facts—then use notes to guide you through your speech. Don’t write out your whole presentation. It’s unnatural to read from a speech while giving a presentation. You can’t make eye contact and the speech just ends up sounding canned and insincere. So instead, identify the facts, statistics, and details of your presentation and then memorize them. This way, you can just talk about your ideas and you will sound natural. You can have notes to remind you of your key points and structure, but only as a guide. Don’t read from your notes for more than one sentence.

• Remember that your nervousness is irrational. Most people get nervous when giving a presentation. This is usually because you are thinking about yourself, what you look like, your mistakes and flaws, and how people perceive you. It’s hard, but try to instead stay focused only on the topic of the speech. Here’s a secret: while you are giving your speech, many people in the class will be daydreaming, wondering why that person was rude to them in the hall just before class, thinking about themselves and how they look today, or wondering how they will sound when they participate in the post-presentation discussion. In other words, people notice you less than you think they do.

Here are the elements of public speaking that you want to practice in this presentation:
• Rebuttal & Refutation: This means anticipating and addressing the opponent’s or audience member’s objection or counter argument. If you eliminate the objections to your argument before someone makes those objections, you will seem much more persuasive.
• Eye contact. You should make constant, sweeping eye contact with your audience. This takes practice, so practice with your family, friends, or like Cartman, your collection of dolls and stuffed animals.
• Voice projection. Note how loud your teachers talk. They are almost yelling. The classroom does not have good acoustics and you will have to really speak up for the class to hear you.
• Subject-matter competence. If you really know your subject, your facts, and what the rebuttals and objections will be, than you should be able to do your speech more or less without notes. Once we get going this year, you will really be able to tell which students know their subject inside and out and which do not. Practice, practice, practice, study, study, study.
• Pace yourself. Practice your speech many times. Some people speed up and finish in two minutes, some slow down and take twenty. Really work on getting your speech down to the right length and try to stay at that pace.
• Evidence: you need to make your case logically. This means that you need to give the audience three reasons to believe your thesis and you need to give some evidence (statistics, quotes, charts, graphs, etc) that each reason is true. Research is key here.
• Passion: if you really want to convince us of something, you should seem convinced of it yourself. Raise your voice; make it clear to us that you are concerned. If you sound like Ben Stein, you are not convincing us of much.
• Professionalism: Stay professional. If you curse you might get some laughs from the audience, but they don’t give you the grade. I do. And I need you to take this assignment seriously. Leave the adolescent humor to me.

Test Directions

Mr. Oliver
Sports Mgmt.
Final Screenplay Test

Directions: Your test today is to create an additional one and a half pages of your screenplay, based on your treatments. It should be properly formatted and have in it all the things we’ve been studying, great dialogue, conflict, a theme, and a well described setting. You can choose to write any scenes that you choose: the beginning, the middle, or the end. You can go back and forth if you choose. The minimum requirement is to be as creative as possible and to write one and a half pages.

To get the BEST GRADES, simply follow this checklist

• Is the screenplay PROPERLY FORMATTED, slug lines that tell the viewer where and if the scene is day or night?

• Does it contain great dialogue that moves the story along and is realistic?

• Is the dialogue in the right place on the page?

• Does it contain conflict and tension?

• Does it have a theme?

• Are the descriptions of the setting vivid?

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Aim: How is setting important in our screenplays?

Do Now: We are having a quiz, please do the best that you can. It is on what we have been studying this week. You have 15 minutes…

1.) Administer quiz. Okay pens down and pass these up to the front.(15 min.)
2.) Mini Lesson: Today we will be talking about the setting to your screenplays. I remember some of you expressed that you were having difficulties with this.

The setting for your screenplay is just as important as anything else, but you have to be descriptive. Remember, this is your world that you are creating…

3.) MODEL:
CLICK on the LINK to see three insanely great descriptions of settings. Read them for two minutes then turn and talk to your partner to guess what each one is describing…

Aim: What is your theme in your screenplay and how do you communicate it?

Do Now: List in your notebooks the three things that are important when using conflict in your screenplays? These may be collected… (3 min.)

2.) Mini-lesson: Today, I want to talk about what the themes are of your scripts.
First of all, what is a theme? Turn and talk to your partner for 30 seconds I’ll pick someone at random in 30 seconds

Now Turn and talk to your partner and tell him or her what the author says about theme, be prepared to discuss it. I will pick on three random people in 1 minute.

Share Out: So, who can tell the class what this author says is important about theme?

(1 min.)

Pairs:
Brainstorm 6 of your favorites, 3 from each partner, they can be from any genre of entertainment…
Work with your partner to see if you can write what the theme is for these popular shows, movies, etc. See if you can take a guess…
(3-5 min.)

Independent Practice: Remember, the theme is your main idea, and another thing you must be conscious of, along with good dialogue, and conflict.
Let’s practice this…

I’m going to give you a theme and I want you to create a dialogue that shows the theme clearly in the scene. I’m picking one that is pretty easy and pretty universal. I’m sure you’ve seen it before, but maybe didn’t realize it…

Create a dialogue between two characters, preferably two characters from your treatments. Create a scene with good dialogue, conflict, and the theme of “Love conquers all…” I want it in proper screenplay format and it should have at least 15 lines of dialogue…
Please write your scene on paper, so they’ll be usable for tomorrow, and you can finish them for homework if need be. You have 15 minutes…

Share out: Okay pens down, if you didn’t finish your scene, you can do so for homework, I’m going to call on three people at random to read theirs…

Summary: If you are finished I’ll collect it, if not finish it for homework. Tomorrow we will be having a quiz on what we’ve done this week…

I’m going to pick someone at random to tell me what this author says about theme…

Aim: How can we use conflict to heighten our screenplays?
